Shancheng Alley (山城巷), often called the “Alley of the Mountain City,” is a historical lane in Chongqing, renowned for its unique mix of natural beauty, historical buildings, and old-world charm. The alley stretches upwards from the foot of the mountain, offering incredible views of the city and the Yangtze River, as well as an array of fascinating sights along the way.
Dating back to 1900, Shancheng Alley has deep historical roots. Originally a humble residential lane, the area was illuminated by French missionaries who installed street lamps, earning it the name “Tiandeng Lane” (Sky Lantern Lane). In 1972, the name was officially changed to “Shancheng Alley,” reflecting the city’s iconic mountainous terrain and unique cultural identity. This makes it the only alley in Chongqing named after its mountainous nature. Over the years, Shancheng Alley has transformed into a must-see destination for anyone seeking to explore the old city and its stories.
Getting to Shancheng Alley
There are two entrances to Shancheng Alley:
- Upper Entrance: Located near the Zhongxing Road (中兴路) and Maogong Mansion (猫公馆). To reach it, take Metro Line 1 to Jiaochangkou Station (较场口站), Exit 5. It’s about a 10-minute walk from there, but be warned—this entrance is all uphill, so it’s not recommended for a leisurely walk.
- Lower Entrance: Located at Consul’s Lane (领事巷), you can take Metro Line 1 to Qixinggang Station (七星岗), Exit 1, and walk about 10 minutes to the entrance. This route is much easier to navigate as it is downhill, making for a relaxing and enjoyable stroll.
