Zhazidong Prison (渣滓洞), located near Chongqing’s Gele Mountain Martyrs’ Cemetery, holds a tragic yet important place in China’s history. Originally a small coal mine named for its low coal yield and high slag, it was transformed in 1939 into a prison by the Nationalist government’s military intelligence agency. The prison became infamous for holding revolutionary figures, including Jiang Jie and Hua Ziliang. The site is also well-known as the filming location for the movie In the Flames of Eternal Life (在烈火中永生), which depicted the harsh conditions and bravery of the prisoners. How to Get There
Subway: Take Line 1 to Shijingpo Station (石井坡站). From there, it’s within walking distance, although the walk is somewhat long. Alternatively, you can transfer to Line 1 and get off at Ciqikou Station (磁器口站), where you can take a tourist bus or a taxi (a taxi is more economical if traveling in a group, costing around 10 RMB).
Bus: You can take the 232, 232 (express), 209, 215, 237, 248, 501, 503, 504, or 805 buses to Donghua Hospital Station (东华医院站) or the Yingshanhong Station (映山红站).
